This was a challenge set me by a customer who bought a green assymetrical lattice bowl which he was thrilled with as it reminded him of a cabbage! I am so pleased he suggested it as my natural instincts are to go with asymmetry, but I think this has worked well and it looks stunning whether hanging on a wall or as a centrepiece on a table.
It has an approximate diameter of 33cm.
It is made in several stages, each stage fired in a kiln up to 800 C over a period of 24 hours. First I construct and fire the clear glass lattice. This is then filled with crushed coloured glass – a mixture of blue shades to give depth and interest. This stage is repeated 2 or 3 times, gradually building up the layers. Finally the piece is laid over a mould and fire so that it ‘slumps’ down to take the shape of the mould.
